Workplace-Specific Language Training
Workplace training involves employees attending workplace-specific English classes that are taught by trained instructors, usually at the workplace.
Program Details
The English at Work program, established in 1983 by the Province of Manitoba, is designed to assist businesses and organizations with the English language training supports they need with immigrant employees. Classes are usually conducted near the end of a workday, for an agreed upon number of weeks, months, or even year-round. Employers participating in this program generally contribute 50% of the instructor's wages. New employers involved in this program are eligible for a one-year 100% instructor wage contribution by the Province.
A partnership between the employer and employee recoginzes the time the employee is in class. Employers compensate employees for half of their time in class, and employees are expected to contribute the other half on their own time. This forms a three-way partnership between the Province, the employer and the employee.
