Parade Float and International Walk of Flags

Parade Float
This summer, the South Central Immigrant Services created a parade float to enter into local parades. The colourful float contained flags of countries represented in the South Central Region of Manitoba. Currently our services have worked with client who represent over 80 different countries.
The truck and trailer were generously provided by Dennis Funk of Realstone Masonry. The float appeared in the Altona Sunflower Festival, the Winkler Harvest Festival, and the Morden Corn & Apple Festival.

International Walk of Flags
At the Winkler Harvest Festival, the South Central Immigrant Services put together a Walk of Flags in the park on Saturday afternoon. Over 80 flags were set up with an information sheet about each country attached to its flag pole. Quizzes were handed out to people and they could search for the answers on the information sheets and enter the completed quiz to win a prize.

Grand Opening of Regional Connections on Main!!

On September 15th, 2010, we celebrated the Grand Opening of our new classroom space on Main Street. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place at 1:30 p.m. The Honourable Jennifer Howard, Minister of Labour and Immigration, attended the event and spoke to those in attendance. Afterwards, refreshments were served and the building was open for viewing.

Regional Connections is home to several programs offering support services to newcomers to the region. Pembina Valley Language/Education for Adults (PVLEA) is a regional program providing English as an Additional Language classes and literacy classes; South Central Immigrant Services (SCIS) is a regional program providing settlement support services to immigrants and is host to a unique employment service assisting anyone who is 18 years or older and eligible to work in Canada. English at Work program provides English classes to employees at their place of work, focusing on workplace-specific language.

In 2008, Regional Connections head office moved into a new space at 295 Perry Street in Winkler. The new space created a "One Stop Shop" for immigrants by providing settlement and language training services, classrooms, a computer lab and a teacher's resource library all in one convenient place.

Within the year, project coordinators realized that they were rapidly growing out of the new space, as the need for more services nearly doubled. Classrooms were built at a new location at 725 Main Street in Winkler in 2009, and this year additional space has been developed and will be ready for classes and programs this fall.

Last year, PVLEA offered classes to over 900 students and SCIS welcomed 1025 newcomers to the region.
